Roasted yam as a meal cuts across every segment of Nigeria. It can be traced as far back as pre-colonial Nigeria when farming was the major occupation, farmers who did not have the luxury of cooking utensils in the farm would set up a fire place, put the yam on fire an go out to work coming back at intervals to check its progress. They would eventually settle down to enjoy this delicacy with either palm oil sauce with salt and pepper or enjoy it in its plain state.

Today, it is the number one quick meal prepared when people go camping, it is also a delight among the Igbos from eastern Nigeria especially during new yam festival celebrations, Even eateries have included it in their menu.
